학생들은 일반적으로 학교 교육을 통하여 새로운 지식을 배우고 익히게 되는 동시 에 일상의 경험을 통하여 사회에 적응하고 생활하는 데 필요한 지식이나 지혜를 얻게 된다. 저자의 경험으로는 학생들이 학교에서 배우는 지식과 일상생활의 관찰을 통하여 배우는 지식을 별개로 생각하는 경향이 있으며, 학교에서 배운 지식을 일상생활에 응용하고 적용하는 노력이 부족한 것 같다. 따라서 이 책은 학생들로 하여금 생활 속에서 경험을 통하여 알게 된 실험적 결과들을 과학 분야에 대한 지식으로 변환하여 사용할 수 있는 능력을 배양하는 데 목적을 두고 저술되었다.
즉, 학생들이 수업 또는 일상생활을 통하여 알게 된 내용을 바탕으로 주어진 문제 들을 스스로 해결하도록 유도하는 논리적 사고력의 향상에 목표를 두고 있다. 한 예로서 수학시간에 배운 내용을 과학과목에 적용하고 활용하는 능력을 향상시키는 동시에 자신이 알고 있는 지식을 명료하게 논리적으로 설명하기 위하여 수학의 필요성을 간단히 설명하였다.
과학에 흥미를 가진 학생들을 위해 저술되었으나, 과학기술 사회를 보다 잘 이해 하고자 하는 인문사회계열 학생 및 예체능계열 학생들에게도 도움이 되리라 판단한다. 학문별로 분리되어 있는 자신의 지식을 통합하여 논리적인 사고력을 바탕으로 융․복합적 사고력을 향상시킴으로서 자연과학분야에서 일어나는 문제점을 해결하고 이를 통하여 새로운 것들을 개발하고 활용하는 능력을 배양하는데 도움이 되었으면 한다
